A new 2010!

After long years offline, the KVHA blog has been given new life. So welcome back everyone!

Upcoming events include the following:
- Oct 13 2010, Wednesday: Feast day of Our Lady of Fatima, Community chapel
- Oct 31 2010, Sunday: Children's Trick or Treat Event, Village Clubhouse

*And, for the record, this blogger is highly against the construction of a covered court in the park. Want to know why? I'll send you a letter.

Feel free to share your comments, proposals, suggestions, and whatnot.

  1. interested to know why you are against providing the village residents a venue to play sports, etc. regardless of weather...is there something you know that we don't? ;)

  2. Hi Mommy C

I don't assume to know more than anyone though I'd like to think that I'm trying to cover all the details that may affect my way of life in the village for the future.

But I guess the comment I wrote was too long for the message box. Here's a page where I've listed down my thoughts though.

  3. I read your two cents and respect your views. I admire your courage to put your sentiments out there. As they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Allow me to give my few cents as well.
It is easy to express your objection to something if it does not appeal to you in any form. I am assuming you are not into sports...most people who have no interest in sports and outdoor recreational activities usually could care less about things like a covered basketball court, or even just improving the current lighting facilities (which has been there for the last couple of decades). It would appear mundane and trivial to someone who is more interested in spending time on Facebook, writing or playing video games. In the same way that an athlete or outdoorsy type of person would feel suffocated if they were forced to sit in front of a computer all day or appreciate art if these aren’t any of their interests.
The truth is, is that this proposal has been ongoing for decades (probably even before you were born). Politicians have come and gone with their promises which were never fulfilled. It left generations of KVHA kids disappointed that they once again had to be given the run around.
The basketball court is an integral part of this community. Why so? It has brought generations of residents together. It has been the avenue for lifelong friendships. It gives kids and adults alike the option to spend time outdoors. With all this technology (game consoles and the internet), people are getting less and less physically active which is in the long run, hazardous to one’s health. It is also an alternative to keep kids away from drugs.
I agree with you that any suggested plan for the Village must be thought out and prepared for properly. If it is something related to construction, then it must go through the process of being approved to ensure that the design, maintenance, cost implications should be considered. I don’t doubt that the KVHA Board will take a project such as this so lightly. With all the talented architects in our village (you should know right? ) I am sure this will not be overlooked. Let us not under estimate them.
Having a covered court will not be a financial hassle. The court, as it is now, charges a fee if the lights are used. Nothing will change, other than possibly increasing the rental fee, which will be beneficial to the village as an alternative source of much needed funds. We will even be able to offer that as a venue for other activities (like birthday parties) which can generate additional revenue.
Let’s turn the tables around. If God forbid, our village were to be hit by calamity and we were forced to seek shelter in, let’s say, the covered court of Barrio Kapitolyo...but their residents protested because of a possible ‘security threat’, how would that make you feel? I myself am concerned about the safety of my home and family. But we should know when we should put these aside to help the greater good.
If we are talking practicality, with the number of kids in the village, it is all but practical to have a covered court so that they will still have a place to go to play sports or even just hang out even when it rains. The tennis court (which used to be a shell court) is no longer available for serious play.
I was in elementary and used to play kickball in that court when it was still being constructed. We used to have summer volleyball and basketball leagues, both for the kids and the parents (which I fervently wish would be taken on as a recurring project of the Board). It was a bummer when the games were postponed due to the rains. Now that I am a mother, my kids enjoy the same court and feel the same way when it rains. The cycle continues.
Unfortunately, from my perspective (a mother who values outdoor play), I see no disadvantage to covering the court because it is long overdue and will benefit the residents in the long term.

  4. I like the points you've made and I agree regarding the activities you cited. I would love to see a place where gatherings and activities can be held for residents and guests. But I'd love it more that there be some class to the construction. It seems at the moment that consultants and committees don't seem to be seeing eye to eye. (Somehow it's strange to me that consultants haven't really even seemed to be consulted.)

I understand that the proposal has been there for a long while now but there just doesn't seem to be enough planning. What happens to the surroundings. Is the only future that for a covered court? I think it would be a nice thing to stand up for the other important structures around the area (the chapel, the clubhouse, a playground) in the face of a neighbor that may or may not pose some kind of issue (benefit or disadvantage) to them.

Everyday is a time for change and I can accept that and embrace it. But I also don't think anyone would want to hear an "I told you so..." or worse an "Ano yan?!" in the end.

I want to be proud to show off a covered area like I'm proud to show off a functional clubhouse, a peaceful plaza, or a quaint chapel. But I'd like to think that we all agree: A rushed monstrosity is just out of the question. haha

  5. Nice one! And it does appear that you know something that we don't...lol

Hopefully whoever these people are should put their egos and personal interests aside for the good of the community...and for the sake of our children and the generations to come. :)
